Stephen is a retired Police Officer from Larkhall, who’s used the app to help with the transition to retirement, meet old friends and contribute to improving his local area.

Here’s what he said about the app:

“I joined BetterPoints after hearing about it through my colleague. Everyone needs to do their bit for air quality and cutting their carbon footprint. Walking has really benefitted me. I’ve retired from five days a week in a high-pressure job, and going from that to essentially nothing was a stark contrast. Getting out and about helped me with the transition.

When I can leave the car at home now I can, just for little things like getting my prescription, going to the barbers and picking up a few bits from the shop.

Leaving my car for smaller trips has helped socially too. I’ve bumped into old school friends, work colleagues, old athletics team-mates and just had those interactions. I’ve also managed to arrange a round of golf with an old friend who I met on a walk.

The £1 coffees really appeal to me. I can walk through the woods from mine to Chatelherault Country Park so grabbing a coffee on my walk sounds great. I’m currently working a little bit for the council’s anti-social behaviour team, so I get around the area a lot, for example to Lanark Loch, and I play golf in East Kilbride, and I can get a coffee in both places.

I don’t know anything else which incentivises you to keep fit like this. Tackling obesity and keeping people healthier is very important, and I really like that aspect of it.”
